The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission deferred a decision on the importation of live captive deer into Florida from out of state until the September meeting.

Commissioners, meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lakeland on Thursday, said they want more time to hear from staff and stakeholders about options to lessen the chances of Chronic Wasting Disease being introduced into Florida.

Similar to mad cow disease, CWD is always fatal in animals but isn’t known to affect people. The disease has not been found in Florida, but it has been discovered in 22 states, two Canadian provinces and South Korea.

The FWC said it has received a lot of comment from the public since May from deer hunters and owners of deer farms and hunting preserves.

There will probably be a lot of public comments at the next FWC meeting Sept. 4-6 in Pensacola.
